Integration of RFID technology onto healthcare/testing products boosts identification and storage capacities as compared to conventional bar-code based systems, which are prone to errors and read/write failures. Initial test products aimed at portraying the versatility of RFID systems include cryovials, test tubes, patient wristbands, blood and IV bags, adhesive labels, pharmaceutical bottles, and generic specimen containers. Each product is accompanied with its own read/write device able to passively power the chip and transmit information securely and in close contact, providing conformity to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act(HIPAA).

Smart Medical Technologies' software solutions complement the high capacity data storage capabilities provided by RFID, structured on a modular platform that is custom designed to meet the needs of laboratory and hospital information management systems. Our information architecture, e-TRIMS, or the Electronic Test Request Information Management System, enables doctors to communicate with hospitals and laboratories to convey patient history and requested tests, all while binding the information directly to the sample. Information may be archived to a back end database, or transmitted to complementary LIMS and HIMS systems via messaging that conforms to the Health Level 7 (HL7) communications protocol.
